Frequently Asked Questions

Glaut and AI-moderated interviews (AIMI)

Welcome to Glaut! Get started faster by learning some basics

What is Glaut?

Glaut is the AI-native market research Service-as-a-Software. Glaut is an end-to-end market research platform, where researchers execute large-scale research studies about customers, employees, patients, and citizens to extract qualitative insights at scale.

How? Glaut combines the efficiency of a survey with the depth of a 1-to-1 interview, replacing closed-ended questionnaires with "AIMI" (AI-moderated interviews) with thousands of respondents simultaneously.

What is an AIMI (AI-moderated interview)?

An AIMI (AI-moderated interview) is a semi-structured interview where a human researcher designs the outline with a mix of open and closed-ended questions. Our AI-powered software then conducts the interview via voice, delivering personalized follow-ups to deeply understand the respondent’s perspectives.

How does AI-moderation work?

AI moderation uses advanced LLMs to replace the human moderator in interviews, offering:

  • Human-like engagement:  Interprets answers from respondents, and makes thoughtful follow-ups in real time to explore their opinions and feelings more in depth.
  • 24/7 availability: Conducts interviews anytime, anywhere, without needing human support.
  • Multilingual capabilities: Handles interviews in over 50 languages.
  • Unmatched consistency: Never gets tired or distracted.
How is Glaut different from traditional research methods?

Glaut combines elements of quantitative and qualitative research, offering a unique, scalable approach to uncover deeper insights.

Like Quantitative Research:

  • Scalable data collection: Gathers insights from large respondent pools, through a single URL.
  • Structured responses: Supports formats like yes/no, multiple choice, and NPS.

Unlike Quantitative Research:

  • Depth over numbers: Focuses on nuanced, open-ended insights rather than purely statistical trends.

Like Qualitative Research:

  • Open-ended questions: Encourages thoughtful, detailed open-ended answers.
  • In-depth exploration: Captures motivations, opinions, and emotional drivers.

Unlike Qualitative Research:

  • Efficiency: AI-moderated interviews are usually under 20 minutes, unlike long-form studies.
  • Scalability: Handles hundreds of respondents, delivering faster, broader insights.
What sets Glaut apart from other AI moderator tools?

Unlike other AI tools that operate as "black boxes," Glaut is built for experienced researchers, giving them significant control, customization and flexibility over each step of a research process, from briefing to final report. Glaut also stands out with its voice-based approach, where both questions and answers are delivered and processed via voice. Finally, one of our platform's core strenghts is the focus on verbatim analysis and interpretation, such as inferring purchase likelihood or NPS scores, without directly asking those questions to the respondents.

In summary:

  • Customization & Flexibility for researchers
  • Voice-based research
  • Deeper insights from verbatim

Which languages can Glaut support?

Glaut supports over 50 languages for both interviews and analysis, making it ideal for multilingual research projects. The interview language and analysis language can differ, allowing you to reach respondents in their native tongue while standardizing analysis in a preferred language.

Glaut also accommodates regional dialects, such as different pronounciations of Spanish (from Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina) and English (from the USA, UK, Australia, South Africa), ensuring nuanced understanding across diverse audiences. With each release, we expand our language capabilities to meet the needs of global researchers.

How and when to use Glaut with another quant survey?

Glaut can seamlessly complement quantitative surveys by adding a qualitative dimension to your project:

  • Embedding Glaut in a quant platform: Integrate Glaut directly within your existing quant survey software to enrich the project with a more effective way to collect answers for open-ended questions. Respondents can be redirected from and to Glaut after completing the quantitative portion, providing deeper context to their answers.
  • Best practice: Glaut voice interviews allow researchers to explore motivations, emotions, and detailed feedback, leading to richer answers from the audience compared to open-ended in a survey .
How and when to use Glaut natively?

While Glaut can be used as an add-on to a quant survey, Glaut shines as a stand-alone research programming software.

  • Data collection capabilities: Glaut handles both open- and closed-ended questions, coding responses automatically in real-time, and eliminating the need for additional tools to analyze the data.
  • Export flexibility: Glaut provides export features for all collected data, enabling advanced statistical or custom analyses in external software if needed.
What is Glaut's standard duration?

Interviews typically last from 2 to 10–15 minutes. Longer span are still in test, to find the best fit between Glaut and our customers research techniques.

Do Glaut work with incentive-based respondents?

Glaut works with various distribution channels, including panel providers, social media platforms, and any other medium where you can share a Glaut link.

Incentives can boost participation rates and are recommended in many research use cases. However, Glaut’s interactive format has achieved high response rates (~80%) even without them.

How does the analysis work?

Glaut software is able to perform in-depth, automatic, real-time analysis of unstructured data from thousands of AI-moderated interviews:

  • Thematic coding of verbatims: Glaut performes multi-layered thematic analysis ( codes and sub-codes) from open-ended responses. This process can be executedtrough:
    • Customizable instructions: Researchers can specify the goal of the analysis, such as identifying emotions, key drivers, or other tailored objectives, and Glaut will find suitable themes by looking at the answers.
    • Codebook support: Alternatively, researchers can provide a predefined codebook, and Glaut will apply it to categorize responses.
  • Entity recognition: Glaut can analyze and highlight specific entities mentioned in responses, such as brands, products, or organizations.
  • Interpretative analysis: Glaut can interpret verbatim through a custom lens, decided by researchers. This is used to extract emotions, sentiment, likelyhood to purchase or to churn, or other tailor-made analyses.

This flexibility allows for tailored, in-depth analysis that aligns with your research goals.

What output does Glaut provide?

Glaut delivers three complementary outputs:

  • Dashboard visualizations: researchers can access interviews analyses on Glaut's platform, visualizing codes and sub-codesderived from responses, enabling segmentation of insights across answers.
  • CSV/SPSS export output: researchers can export analyzed interviews’ data in a structured CSV/SPSS file, to conduct more complex statistical analyses with them.
  • Report: Glaut provides modular executive reports about key insights, focused on actionable advice, and high-level recommendations to drive decision-making.

Privacy

What is the role of Glaut in terms of Data Privacy?

Glaut is a software that researchers use to perform market research  (collecting and processing respondents’ data). Therefore, Glaut acts as a Data Processor for the customer (which is the Data Owner), without collecting nor retaining PII. Before kicking off a project, Glaut and the customer will execute a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) to formalise this relationship.

Does Glaut collect PII (”Personally Identifiable Information”) data from respondents?

At Glaut, we do not collect any PII from respondents. However, if customers wish to track respondents for research purposes, they can provide an anonymized ID as a URL parameter. This allows the analysis of responses while maintaining strict adherence to privacy standards and avoiding the sharing of any PII.

How does Glaut address data processing transparency for respondents?

Glaut provides flexible solutions to support privacy communication with respondents. In compliance with GDPR regulations, the responsibility for notifying respondents about data processing activities lies with the Data Controller (the customer). As a Data Processor, Glaut is not required to display a privacy notice at the start of an interview. However, upon request, Glaut can either display its own Privacy Notice (attached here) or include a link to the customer’s Privacy Notice, ensuring transparency and compliance.

How does Glaut ensure compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and other data protection regulations?

Glaut adheres to all applicable data protection regulations, including GDPR and CCPA, and maintains comprehensive documentation to certify compliance. This ensures that our processes align with the highest standards of data privacy and security, providing transparency and accountability to our customers.

How do you handle data deletion requests from users or organizations?

In compliance with GDPR requirements, Glaut facilitates data deletion upon request from our customers. Once processed, data deletion is permanent and irreversible. Therefore, we recommend initiating deletion requests only after the project has been completed and the data is no longer of value or relevance.

Who can access customers data on Glaut?

Customers data is segregated in different Organisations on Glaut. This enables that only selected members of the customer’s team can access their data. Within an Organisation, we also support Workspace and Project levels.

We support role-based access control (RBAC) to limit access to specific people defined by the customer at each level. This ensures that the customer has full control on who can access specific data within their Organisation.

Members from Glaut’s customer success team have access to all respondents data to provide project execution support to our customers, if required. Glaut’s responsibilities, including confidentiality, are regulated both in our commercial agreement and in the DPA that will both be executed before kicking off the first project.

Where is the data stored and processed?

All data is securely stored and processed in the cloud, with servers located exclusively within the European Union to ensure compliance with regional data protection regulations. Specifically, data is stored using MongoDB Atlas, and our services are hosted on reliable platforms such as Heroku and AWS.

Do you have EU servers for EU customers and US servers for other customers?

As of today, all the servers used by our infrastructure are located in the EU. However, through our 3rd-party infrastructure providers, we can easily set up US-based servers if needed.

Provisioning and controls for AI models

Which LLMs power Glaut's engine?
Glaut’s infrastructure is model agnostic, meaning we can switch the underlying AI models at any time to improve the overall experience and performance. We carefully vet any LLM provider from security and privacy perspectives before adopting it, to make sure our respondents data is safe.

Currently, we are using AI models through Microsoft Azure cloud. All their policies (which we inherit in Glaut software) can be found here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-services/policy-reference
Are my research respondents' data used to train Glaut or the LLMs ?

None of the interviews data is used to train AI models. As clearly stated in Glaut’s AI model provider’s data policy, no customer data is EVER used to train their models. This means our respondents’ data is protected and not used for other purposes outside of the research project.

Glaut might use an aggregated and anonymized version of respondents’ data to improve its services for its customers. This does not in any case breach the confidentiality and privacy of our respondents’ data.

Does Glaut validate the quality and accuracy of the AI system’s data sources and output?

Glaut employs rigorous quality controls to validate the accuracy and reliability of its AI systems. Central to this process are agent evaluations: AI-driven assessments designed to measure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to functional requirements with a level of precision and scale beyond human capabilities. These evaluations ensure that AI outputs are tailored to each project's unique needs by analyzing key metrics such as response relevance, data interpretation accuracy, and compliance with guidelines. This approach enables extensive testing on a scale that surpasses traditional manual evaluations, delivering actionable and meaningful results.
